How Has Technology Changed People’s Lives?

When you first hear of the word ‘technology’, you will most likely think of the most-high tech examples, such as autonomous vehicles and space rockets. However, technology is all around us. Even if something may not seem particularly advanced, it has likely come in some contact with technology in its supply chain.

We will go into more detail in this article about how has technology changed people’s lives?

     Wider Accessibility to Goods.

Thanks to technology, the everyday person can be able to afford goods we happen to take for granted. Such as soap, clothing and also food. Going back hundreds of years, humans were limited to using inefficient handmade tools. Everything had to be mostly man-made, at the very minimum.

Apart from being very labor-intensive to produce simple goods, there was also a barrier as you had to be well-trained in order to be able to function. This high level of expertise further raised the cost of goods.

However, automation at all levels of the supply network dramatically reduced costs. To re-use the example of soap, agriculture machinery made feed for animals cheaper, in turn making the fats used to make soap much cheaper. Furthermore, in the actual processing of the raw materials into soap, machines could now be employed, thus dramatically increasing output.

     Communication.

The way we communicate has altered greatly. Before, almost all of the communication that we had was in conversation with those in proximity to us. Later on, letters began to be widely used when paper became cheaper and reliable postage services were established.

In the late 1870s, the first working telephone was invented in the United States. By the 1930s, people living far away from each other no longer had to send letters that could take weeks to arrive. Instead, they could use payphones or, if they were rich enough, use the telephone in their home.

However, talking over the phone was expensive, even if it was more convenient than sending letters. It would not be for over a century later since the first practical telephone was invented. That there will be another major technological development in the field of communication.

Thanks to the internet, people could communicate by text at an extremely low cost. Eventually, this also evolved in internet calls and more importantly, video calls. Now anyone can pay a flat fee for unlimited internet, and communicate with whomever they want to. No matter where they happen to be in the world.

     Your Work Life.

How we work would likely have been unimaginable to the past generations. You are now able to work for a company without the need to be in the office every day. Some companies have also switched exclusively to remote work. All of this is possible thanks to technology such as computers, the internet, and various pieces of software.

Another aspect of this is freelancing. You can be anywhere in the world, getting paid for your expertise, while also having the ability to have a flexible work schedule.

Transportation has also revolutionized work. With access to state-of-the-art transportation infrastructure, you can travel to the other side of your city in an hour or less. This has opened up a lot more opportunities to people who would have previously been limited based on where they happen to live. An example of this is the millions of people living in the metropolitan areas of cities that commute back and forth every single day.

Finally, the majority of the jobs that we have right now will not exist without technology. Employment opportunities such as being a mechanic, a computer repairman, and also a search engine optimization expert. Just two hundred years ago, before the Second Industrial Revolution, the majority of people were involved in agriculture.

     Entertainment Mediums.

Entertainment is a great topic to focus on when answering the question of how has technology changed people’s lives? There was a time when entertainment just consisted of looking at the sunrise, playing repetitive games with handmade toys, and going to see a play once a year.

Now, you have essentially infinite sources of entertainment to suit all tastes. And the good thing is that most of it is available for free. Collectively, on the major social media platforms where anyone can be an entertainer, there are thousands of hours of video content uploaded every single minute.

Apart from that, you have other entertainment mediums such as music that also will not be able to exist without technology. Music has existed for thousands of years thanks to expertly crafted instruments. But it wasn’t until the 1930s, when radios became popular, that the music business could truly flourish.

Now, musical talent could more efficiently grow their brand and commercialize their songs. Before that, the only way for singers and musicians to make money was through live performances.

     Our Homes.

We spend a significant portion of our lives in our homes. Whether that is sleeping at night, working from home, or spending time with our loved ones. It is a place to relax and seek refuge. However, thanks to technology, our homes have dramatically changed from what they used to be.

Just over a hundred years ago, the average home began having access to running water. Before that, you would have had to fetch water every time you run out, which would have been every couple of days in a good scenario. This would have also limited your level of hygiene, which could also have potentially affected your health.

It was the same situation with electricity. Until the early 20th century, electricity was a luxury that only the rich could possibly afford. With the widespread electrification of homes, came the use of now essential appliances such as washing machines, vacuum cleaners, and fridges.

Before electricity, such tasks as washing your clothes and cleaning the floor would have been done manually. Moreover, you would not have been able to store food for long periods of time and would have likely consumed a higher proportion of out-of-date food.

     Better Healthcare.

For much of human history, healthcare was essentially non-existent. The average person would not have been able to afford a doctor, and even if he did, the doctor would likely have not been knowledgeable enough of how the human body actually worked. Due to technological progress, the average life expectancy has nearly doubled.

Thanks to high-tech equipment such as X-rays and ultrasound machines, you can now be diagnosed more accurately and without the need for surgery. Furthermore, medical developments such as vaccines and hormone supplements such as insulin, many illnesses such as smallpox and diabetes are no longer deadly if treated.

Medicine now depends on technology and knowledge, for much of human history in most societies it was intertwined with mysticism and religion. Thankfully, the two are now independent of each other in most of the world. Without a doubt, the average life expectancy will keep increasing and suffering will continue to diminish.

     Education Opportunities.

When analyzing the question of how has technology changed people’s lives, you must take into consideration education. Technology leads to major advancement, as well as making the world much more complicated. A by-product of this complication is that you need more educated people to specialize and thus become experts in these fields.

For example, becoming a surgeon, a computer programmer, or an architect. In the long term, this allowed for more people to lift themselves out of poverty and also led to greater income equality.

The positive impact of technology on education is also not just a side effect; it also has a big direct impact. Thanks to technology, we have the internet, which has developed into the biggest library of information that can be accessed within a few clicks. People can now learn about any topic from hairdressing to learning the Python computer language.

This has transformed the way people can educate themselves, they no longer need to spend a lot of money and time attending a university. Instead, they can simply learn bit by bit for a couple of hours a week. The subsequent democratization of education means that anyone can learn skills to improve their lives and increase their earning potential.
